I have attempted to define the Internet, firstly from a historical perspective, and later from a more technical one, e.g. what components there are (TCP/IP protocol), the services available from it (FTP, WWW, News, etc.), and the different internal hierarchical levels in relation to the transmission of data. I did not write a complete discussion about the Internet phenomenon, as the extant literature is more than adequate, but I have tried to explain which services have been offered that care about the needs and economic priorities of SMEs and how these opportunities can interact with the economy market. I found it extremely important to clear up the misconceptions about the computer network. I have focused my attention on the WWW because of its commercial success, and I have explained the services of the Net, e.g. hypertexts, the structure client-server, etc. An often-heard question is this: what is the secret of the increasingly obvious success of ICTs and in particular of the Internet? I believe most of the answers can be found in these factors: the incredible reduction in the costs of hardware and software, the competition between the Internet Service Providers (ISP), the worldwide spread of the Net, and the complete interoperability among different protocols and platforms of browsing, the insignificant costs of connection, the speed and quantity in the transmission of data (even secret ones), and last but not least, the user-friendly browsers. These are, in my opinion, the most interesting and relevant aspects of the structure called the Internet which can interact with the Economic European market.
