I have tried to give a quick glance at the instruments and the services of telematic communications that are available for the SMEs, while also trying to explain the role of ICTs within the SMEs. I wrote a chapter about VANS (Value added network services), in which the EDI and the WWW are among the main new technologies of the technological innovations in the field of communications for enterprises. 

        I quoted an abstract from a recent survey by LIUC (Buonanno G., Ravarini A., Sciuto D., Tagliavini M., "L'impatto di int*net sulle piccole-medie imprese", in Atti del congresso AICA '97 Internet... e oltre, Milano, 24-26 settembre 1997, p. 121-139, Università di Castellanza) about the use of the Internet and Intranet on the SMEs. It appears that this survey is the only one made on a sufficiently deep and national level. Here the lack of innovative mentality showed by the firms is made clear along with the fact that ideas and knowledge about the Net and its possibilities are very often incorrect.
