Page 04: Consequences
and advantages of the Information Society
In relation to the idea of
Information Society: it is apparent that our everyday actions qualifies
us as "Information Society's citizens". Doing things like writing a document
on a computer, sending it as a fax through a modem without having to print
it, or writing our E-mail address in personal cards, are all examples of
the little steps toward the Information Society. When we will be able to
talk with our colleagues via the Internet, to create work groups or teaching
ones on the net, or to read the newspapers from all over the world, while
comfortably seated at home, we will then be within this new society in
every respect.
I have also analysed the
need of the Information Society for financement in the interests of self-existence.
The main role at this point belongs to the private sector, while the PA
(Public Administrations) should give only technical support and ensure
the spread fo action programs. The PA has the unique role as a catalyst,
removing the barriers to market development and easing the access of firms,
in particular the SMEs, to the results of the scientific researches.
It is obvious and certain
that whomever controls information possesses power. SMEs have to learn
how to use the ICT and to make the most of them; they should overcome the
natural barriers against the changes within the Society, and thus modifying
the inertial mentality and behaviour, perhaps with the help of European
efforts. Another possibility that we should not neglect is the training
of employees: good training will lead to improvements within the firm itself.
